INGROWN TOENAIL SURGERY

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH INGROWN TOENAIL SURGERY

Ingrown toenails occur when the side of the toenail begins to grow deep into the sides of the toe. Many times it is much deeper than patients initially think and so “bathroom surgery” is often attempted but unsuccessful. The side of the toe becomes, swollen, painful, red, and can become infected if left untreated. When the nail becomes an irritant to the toe and you begin to experience some of the above symptoms, it is best to visit a podiatrist. A minor procedure in the office can alleviate the problem and ultimately give you significant relief.

THE PROCEDURE

Once it’s determined that you indeed have an ingrown toenail, a quick procedure can be performed. Your toe will be anesthetized with a local anesthesia and therefore during the procedure you will experience the feeling of pressure but no pain. At this point, the entire side of the toenail will be removed back to the level of the nail root.  A chemical will be applied to the nail root to attempt to destroy or kill off that portion of the nail, in essence, trying to prevent the ingrown nail from reoccurring. This is effective roughly 80-90% of the time. An antibiotic cream is applied to the toe along with a small bandage.

AFTER SURGERY

Once the procedure is complete, you can walk immediately afterwards. I recommend that you decrease you activities for the remainder of the day, as the anesthesia will eventually subside. Most patients do not require medication any stronger than ibuprofen afterwards. A post-operative nail pack will be dispensed in the office consisting of dressing supplies, an antibiotic cream, and a cleaning solution. Patients are instructed to keep the dressing dry and to wear it until the following day. At that point it is ok to remove the dressing, rinse the toe in the shower, and then begin cleaning the toe as directed. See Post-Operative Instructions. Patients follow up about two weeks after the procedure and in most cases the toe heals with minimal cosmetic changes.
